FAQ marker Am I getting the correct page?
Microsoft's browser, Internet Explorer, tends to be very aggressive in caching web pages. This improves speed in accessing web pages, however it often will show an older page than what is currently available. Some ways to get around this are:

  • Click on the refresh button or reload button.
  • Under the tools menu option, choose Internet Options. Then midway down the window that comes up, click on the Delete Files button.
  • It may also be possible to convince Internet Explorer that a page is different by changing the capitalization in the address bar.

Jury Service

Who may serve as jurors and how are they chosen?
Among other qualifications, jurors are citizens of the United States who are residents of Clay County 21 years of age or over. Names are selected at random from a master jury list that is compiled from several sources.

How long is the term of service?
GRAND JURY - Grand Jury is for the Term of Court. The Terms of Court are March, June, and November.
PETIT - Petit Jurors complete their service in one day or the duration of the trial. If a juror is chosen to serve on a particular case, he/she would remain for the entire day and each day thereafter until the trial is concluded, which is normally from one to three days. The jurors who are not chosen to serve on a case would usually be excused by mid-afternoon, or before, on Monday. Your service is then complete. If all cases set for trial on your scheduled appearance date are settled by 5:00 p.m. Friday and your appearance on Monday is unnecessary, you will be informed by the jury response line. Again, your service is then complete.

Are Grand and Petit jurors paid for service?
The current statutory fee for jury duty is $6.00 per day and $.07 cents per mile, which is paid at the end of the jury service period.

Excused absences?
Jurors can always be excused for pre-planned vacations, doctor appointments, and business trips during their period of jury service.

How can one verify jury service to an employer?
If your employer requires verification of your service, you may request a certificate from the courtroom clerk for each day of service.

What shall be done with the attached juror summons/questionnaire?
Please complete the attached questionnaire by typing or printing in a legible manner using BLACK ink, retain the top portion, and mail the questionnaire within ten days of receipt. The information on the questionnaire is for the use of the attorneys in selecting jurors for particular cases.

Where do jurors appear for duty?
Jurors will report in at the front counter before entering the Jury Assembly room on the second floor where the Jury Supervisor will meet with you and direct you to a courtroom. Courthouse security does not permit pocketknives, nail files, or any item that can be construed as a weapon on the premises.

Where do jurors phone for further information?
Jurors who are summoned and have questions concerning their service may call the jury supervisor at (816) 407-3999.
