General Information and Fees

All programs are held in the first floor classroom of the R. Kenneth Elliott Children's Justice Center, 351 East Kansas, Liberty, Missouri 64068.

Programs fees are listed with each program below. For cases filed prior to February 1, 2010, all fees are to be paid upon arrival by cash or money order made payable to Office of Dispute Resolution Services. Please bring the exact amount in cash. We do not accept credit cards, debit cards, or checks.

Program attendance is NOT required for parents with children over the age of 17; however, please call Family Court Services (816) 736-8400 and inform us that the class is not necessary for your case due to the age of your children. We are not able to provide child-care. If you have special needs (language, vision, hearing, access, etc.) that need accommodation, please notify this office as soon as possible.

Arrive early for the best parking. Classes begin promptly. Late arrivals will not be admitted. Attendance for the entire presentation is required. Class will be cancelled in inclement weather if Clay County Schools are closed.

If you have a case pending in Clay County and have not specified the case number below, be sure to bring it to class.

Available Programs

C.O.P.E. for Parents who are Divorcing or Modifying their current court order

C.O.P.E. is a three-hour orientation for parents of minor children with a pending dissolution or modification. Class topics include: Features of a parenting plan, how to reduce the impact of divorce on children and families, strategies to protect your child from harmful conflicts, how to make the best of things in your control, how custody is decided in court, and the use of mediation in resolving family disputes.
 

Fees:  A fee of $30 per parent is collected as court costs for cases filed on or after February 1, 2010. Parents pay the fee at the door for cases filed before February 1, 2010.

C.O.P.E. Plus for Parents and Children (ages 6 - 16)

C.O.P.E. Plus is a two-hour program for children (ages 6-16) and their parent(s) with a pending dissolution or modification. Children are divided into two age groups (6-11 & 12-16) and attend an age-appropriate program regarding the normal feelings of divorce, ways to cope with these feelings, parental conflict, and their role in the transitioning family. Parents simultaneously attend an orientation program regarding: Features of a parenting plan, how to reduce the impact of divorce, strategies to protect your child from harmful conflict, how to make the best of things in your control, how custody is decided in court, and the use of mediation in resolving family disputes. During the last hour, parents receive individualized feedback on how their child is coping with the separation of the family.

C.O.P.E. Plus can substitute for C.O.P.E. Class size is limited to 30 parents and 20 children per class. Child-care not provided. The program is developed for children to attend one session. If both parents wish to attend with their children, they should coordinate to attend the same class.
